HIV/AIDS

I read the article about global feminization of HIV/AIDS by Fletcher Njororal and Dr. Oomen-Early, which was very interesting. It was not interesting in a good way but more disturbing than anything really. I wanted to touch on a couple of things I read in this article, one being HIV/AIDS is mainly by heterosexual sexual activity. Many people think this to be more a homosexual disease, which it is clearly not true. More people need to be educated on this subject. When someone thinks of AIDS they usually think of a homosexual.
Under Socio-Cultural factors, it says in South Africa, infected men have sex with a virgin, in which they believe will heal them from AIDS. This sentence is just disturbing to me. This is very sad. As an American, I would think we could go over there to help them understand this is not true. I am not sure if it will work since they believe this, sometimes you cannot change what people believe unless they want to. But at least someone is trying to change their ways. Let them know that this spreads HIV and that is why they are the leading with the numbers of AIDS.
Under the Political factors, it speaks about trafficking. This needs to be put to rest! I cannot believe this still happens. Something needs to be done about this soon. This is horrendous that we have not done anything about this. I am not sure what needs to happen but I know there is something that can and needs to be done.
I think at this point there needs to be more information for everyone to have. I am not sure if there needs to be classes on this subject or teachings in other countries, but it wouldn't hurt. Our society thinks they know everything about HIV but obviously not educated about it at all. With all of the technology, you would (or I) would think there could be a cure. It is sad that we have all the diseases out there but no cure.

HIV and Aids are two very scary issues. There is constant stigma when addressing these issues. One reason is that they claim so many lifes and there should always be one thing to blame it on. Homosexuality, I agree, should not be the blame. Instead we should focus on helping the victims and providing a better safety net. Our main goal is to help our neighbors and those in need.

Christina,
I agree their needs to be more education about HIV/AIDS not only in South Africa but everywhere. The citizens of South Africa need to learn that by a man who is infected having sex with a virgin will only cause the virus to spread. They are not helping the individual but hurting them instead. I also believe that we (Americans) should go to poor countries such as South Africa and help them to establish more educational classes, testing facilities, and treatment for HIV/AIDS. Hopefully this will help reduce the amount of people who become infected.
